FEBRUARY 9 2012 - SOPHIATOWN 100: MOTSWAKO CELEBRATION!

This year sees Sophiatown celebrating 100 years as a neighbourhood – a mix of communities over a century, experiencing all the attendant richness and tragedy of life before, during and after apartheid.

The Trevor Huddleston CR Memorial Centre (THMC) is launching the Sophiatown 100: Motswako Celebration!’ year, both to commemorate what was lost, and to celebrate what has been possible, post 1994.

Preparing for this initiative, THMC has consulted with residents and former residents, youth and other stakeholders in the first part of a three-phase process to develop the precinct vision.  Today the report of the first phase consultation is published, along with the proposed brief to the architects, for further input from interested parties and those with links to this historic suburb.  With the events planned for 2012, the new  cultural centre development forms the backbone of the 100th anniversary year, supporting the revival of the spirit of Sophiatown and celebrating ‘the mix’.

Judge President Fikile Charles Bam

The board and staff of the Trevor Huddleston Memorial Centre, Sophiatown, are extremely sad to inform our friends, colleagues, partners and donors, of the death of Judge President Fikile Bam, founding board member of the Centre , on 18 December 2011.

Bra Fiks , as he was known to friends, brought great wisdom and gentleness to the work of the Centre . He shared and directed our vision to revive the spirit of Sophiatown as a place where everyone was welcome, where arts, culture and heritage flourished, and where young people could get opportunities to develop their full potential. 2012 is the 100th year of Sophiatown becoming a community, and we will be building a Cultural Centre in Sophiatown - a place of dialogue and debate, of artistic expression and creative endeavour, drawing on the legacy of the people of Sophiatown down the ages. Within this space we will pay particular tribute to Fikile.

Condolences sent to the Huddleston Centre will be passed to the family.
