The Trevor Huddleston CR Memorial Centre Sophiatown
Sophiatown gave rise to the explosion of black urban culture in the 1940s which emerged after the end of World War II.
We celebrate the multicultural, creative and entrepreneurial spirit of the old Sophiatown to help shape today’s South African society. So we foster encounters between individuals and groups who might otherwise never know one another; we promote the exchange of ideas and experience between different racial, class and age groups; and we present cultural experiences including dance, music and art in a space that’s safe and open to all.
This work includes the Kofifi Youth Theatre group;
Jazz in Sophiatown sessions
(monthly Sunday afternoons).....
The Naughty Boys Soccer Challenge was launched in September 2010 as part of the establishment
of the first soccer team in Sophiatown since 1955 -
Coached by soccer legends, Sophiatown Boys meets weekly in season to build up a new passion for the game, coaching youngsters and playing friendlies.
Cultural Programmes and Community Engagement
....and public events to mark many national and international days such as Africa Day, Youth Day, Human Rights Day.
Art exhibitions complement the range of cultural events which are fast making Sophiatown the newest site in the oldest suburb as a ‘must see’ experience.
