Heritage remains one of the key focus areas of the centre and a powerful means with which to educate and inspire the youth about the past and the future. Over the last few years a great deal of work has been done in this area, especially with past residents

Celebrating Sophiatown

Drawing on the values and legacy of Sophiatown’s people, we seek to revive the diversity of South Africa’s multi-racial communities and cultural ties through the arts and entrepreneurial initiatives, which promote social benefit as well as creating income streams and opportunities for work.

In this way we celebrate the multicultural, creative and entrepreneurial spirit of old Sophiatown. Not out of nostalgia, but to help build a more connected and integrated South Africa today.

We promote the exchange of ideas and experience between different racial, class and age groups; and invite arts, business and history to meet in dialogue in a space that’s open to all – the Sophiatown Heritage and Cultural Centre.
